Chapter 2 – OPERATION ON LARGE NUMBERS
Sub-topic-6:- DIVISION FACTS
Division is the process of taking a whole item or a set of items and splitting, or
dividing, them into equal groups. When you use division, you are starting with a
larger number, and breaking it into smaller, equal pieces. The goal is to see how
many times the smaller number will fit into the larger number. So it is also known
as repeated subtraction.
The process of division is the inverse of multiplication.
3 taken out 4 times shows the basic division fact:
12 ÷ 3 = 4 or, 12 ÷ 4 = 3
Subtracting the same number repeatedly shows division fact:
(12 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 = 0; 12 ÷ 3 = 4)
Special names for each character in Division
Each part involved in a division equation has a special name.
Dividend ÷ divisor = quotient
Dividend: The dividend is the number that is being divided in the division
process.
Divisor:The number by which dividend is being divided by is called divisor.
Quotient: A quotient is a result obtained in the division process.
18 ÷ 3 = 6
