Chapter 2 – OPERATION ON LARGE NUMBERS

Sub-topic-2:- SUBTRACTION FACTS AND VERTICAL SUBTRACTION

Introduction– Subtraction is the method by which we know the remaining after taken some quantity
from a certain quantity.

Terms related to subtraction

 Minuend – The number from which other number is subtracted is known as minuend.

 Subtrahend –The number which is subtracted from the other number is known as subtrahend.

 Difference –The result of subtraction is called the difference between the given numbers.

Example: 15 – 3 = 12

15 = minuend

3 = subtrahend

12 = difference

 If the order of the numbers is changed then the answer also changes.

Example: 5 – 3 = 2, 3 - 5 is not equal = 2

 Any number – zero = number itself

Example: 5187 – 0 = 5187

 Any number - 1 = Predecessor of the given number.

Example: 2612 – 1 = 2611

 Important Notes:-

Minuend – Subtrahend = Difference

Minuend – Difference= Subtrahend

Subtrahend + Difference = Minuend
