Sub-topic 6 : SUCCESSOR AND PREDECESSOR
Successor and predecessor are also known as after number and before number
respectively.
Predecessor: As we know that predecessor means before number. There are two
methods to find the number before.
1) Say the counting numbers and stop at the number up to which you have to find the
before number.
Example 1: Find the predecessor of 99,999.
Say 99,995, 99,996, 99,997, 99,998 so before 99,999 we said 99,998 so 99,998 is the
predecessor of 99,999.
2) If you want to find the predecessor of given number then, subtract 1 from the given
number.
Example 2:
Predecessor of 9,99,100 is 9,99,100 -1 = 9,99,099
Predecessor of 10,010 is 10,010 – 1 = 10,009
Predecessor of 3,000,000 is 3,000,000 -1 = 2,999,999
Note : Always go for vertical subtraction method while finding out predecessor
There is no predecessor of number zero
Successor: There are two methods to find the successor of the given number.
1) Say the counting numbers and stop at the given number and say the next number
that will be the successor of the given number.
Example 1: Find the successor of 99,909.
Say 99,905, 99,906, 99,907, 99,908, 99,909, and then the next number is 99,910 so
99,910 is the successor of 99,909.
But this method is used only for small numbers.
2) For big numbers the successor is the number obtained by adding 1 to it.
