CHAPTER – UNDERSTANDING THE WEATHER
Weather Stations:
A centralized location that brings together various instruments to measure weather at a specific place and time.
Function:Readings are taken at regular intervals.
Purpose: Data collected is used for mapping and forecasting weather patterns.
Automated Weather Stations (AWS)
Nature: A self-operating system that functions without human intervention.
Sensors & Measurements:
o Temperature and Humidity.
o Wind Speed and Direction.
o Precipitation (Rainfall/Snow).
o Atmospheric Pressure.
Applications:
o Agriculture: For crop planning and irrigation.
o Aviation & Navigation: For safe travel.
o Environmental Monitoring: Tracking climate health.
Case Study (Sikkim, 2023):
o The National Disaster Management Authority installed an AWS at a glacial lake in Sikkim.
o Altitude: Over 4800 metres above sea level.
o Goal: Provide early warnings for upcoming weather conditions in high-altitude regions.
Predicting the Weather
Meteorologists: Scientists who study the atmosphere and weather.
Process:
1. Data Collection: Use instruments to gather data over long periods.
2. Analysis: Study data using scientific methods to identify trends.
3. Forecasting: Predict future weather conditions.
