Literacy
Topic: ‘r’ controlled vowels
Sub Topic:”er”, “ar” and “or” sound words
Learning Objective:
• Recognize and pronounce R-controlled vowel combinations: ar, er
and or.
• Identify R-controlled vowels in written words.
• Use R-controlled vowel words in context through reading and
writing.
Discussion:
• Write the vowels a, e, o on the board.
• Ask students to say the vowel sounds.
• Now add r after each one and say the new sounds:
• ar = a+r as in car
• er = e+r as in her
• or = o+r as in fork
• Explain: When an r follows a vowel, it changes the vowel’s sound—
we call it “Bossy R” because it takes control.
• Create or use a short poem with R-controlled vowels:
• “The bird in the barn
Heard a loud car horn.
It chirped and turned
From dusk till morn.”
• Highlight or circle all the R-controlled words.
• Read together to build fluency.
• Count the number of sounds using phoneme fingers.
• Practice with arm blending.
