Expansion of Solids – Metal Ball and Ring (Demonstration)

Materials: Metal ball and ring apparatus (or alternate: metal lid & bottle)
         Instructions:

             • Heat the metal ball and try to pass it through the ring.
             • It doesn't fit when heated but fits when cool.

Effect Demonstrated: Heat causes expansion in solids.

         Hot Air Balloon (Simple Model)

Materials: Balloon, bottle, hot water, cold water
         Instructions:

             • Place a balloon over the mouth of an empty
                 bottle.
             • Put the bottle in hot water → balloon inflates.
             • Place it in cold water → balloon deflates.

Effect Demonstrated: Air expands on heating,
         contracts on cooling.
