P. 2
Insulators: Materials that do not allow the heat energy to pass through them easily are
called Insulators.
• Plastic, wood, glass, air, water, paper and rubbers are insulators.
• All materials that trap air inside their fibres are excellent insulators like wool, fur, foam and
feather to make winter clothes.
Application of conductors:
• Base of cooking utensils are made up of copper as it is good conductor of heat and
results in uniform heating and cooking food.
• Heating rods are made up of metals as it allows heat energy to pass through them
Application of Insulators:
• Woollen clothes are preferred in winter season because wool is an insulator.
• Two thin blankets keep us warmer than one thick blanket as it traps more air which does
not allow body heat to escape to surrounding and keeps us warm.
• Igloos present in Polar Regions are made of ice because ice is an insulator who traps heat
and does not allow it escape keeping inside space warm.
• Bakelite is used to make handles of cooking utensils to protect our hands from the heat
while cooking because they are good insulators.
