Introduction to India's Diversity
• Travelling through India reveals diverse landscapes, food, languages, and
scripts.
• India has a population of over 1.4 billion people, making it a land of
incredible cultural variety.
• The Anthropological Survey of India's "People of India" project surveyed
4,635 communities, identifying 325 languages and 25 scripts.
India's diversity does not overshadow its underlying unity. Across the country,
we observe common elements in food and clothing despite regional variations.
1. Staple Grains and Foods:
• Across regions, cereals like rice, wheat, and barley, millets such as bajra
(pearl millet), jowar (sorghum), ragi (finger millet), and pulses like
various kinds of dal are common staples.
• These grains are essential for daily meals and serve as the base for a
multitude of dishes.
• Common spices such as turmeric, cumin, cardamom, and ginger are
widely used, creating familiar flavours across India.
The versatility of these ingredients enables the creation of endless culinary
variations. For example, dal (lentil stew) may taste differently depending on the
region due to diverse methods of preparation and unique combinations of
spices.
2. Regional Cuisine and Food Diversity:
• Each region boasts its signature dishes, such as biryani from Hyderabad,
dosa from Tamil Nadu, or rogan josh from Kashmir.
• The blending of local ingredients and cooking traditions showcases the
perfect balance of unity (common staples) and diversity (regional
variations).
