LESSON NOTE
What is a Map?
A map is a drawing of the Earth's surface (or part of it) on a flat surface.
Maps show locations, features, and details using symbols, colours, and lines.
Types of Maps:
1. Physical Maps
Show natural features like mountains, rivers, and plains.
2. Political Maps
Show boundaries of countries, states, and cities.
3. Thematic Maps
Show specific information like rainfall, population, crops, etc.
Components of a Map
1. Distance (Scale)
Tells how much the real distance has been reduced on the map.
Example: 1 cm = 100 km.
Helps measure actual distance between places.
2. Direction
Maps are usually drawn with North at the top.
Directions: North, South, East, West (cardinal) and NE, NW, SE, SW (intermediate).
Compass is used to show directions.
3. Symbols
Simple drawings or signs to show objects like buildings, roads, rivers, etc.
A legend or key explains the symbols.
4. Colours
Different colours show different features:
Blue: water
Green: plains
Brown: mountains
Yellow: deserts
