P. 2
7. In the given image you can notice that, the roots of a plant absorb
water from the soil.
i. The __________ carries water and nutrients from the roots to
the other parts of the plant.
ii. Why do you think the stem is also important in helping the
plant get water?
iii. What do you think would happen if the stem was damaged?
8. Raaya was helping her grandma in the garden. She noticed different plants with
unusual-looking stems. One day, she saw a potato plant and was surprised when her
grandmother told her that the potato is actually a modified stem, not a root. Later, she
saw a cactus in the backyard, and her grandmother explained that its green stem stores
water and also helps in photosynthesis since the leaves are reduced to spines. The
potato is considered a modified stem because:
i. From roots, new plants grow, which is a feature of stems.
ii. It does not store food.
iii. It has nodes and buds like a stem.
iv. It has a unique shape.
a) In a cactus, which function usually performed by leaves is taken over by the
stem, and why?
b) Can you name one more plant where the stem is modified for climbing?
9. Identify the correct parts of a flower based on their functions, as
given in the clues:
a) After fertilization, this part will develop into a fruit
b) This structure protects the flower bud before it blooms.
c) This part is responsible for receiving pollen during
fertilization.
d) The colourful part of the flower that attracts pollinators.
10. Anmol observed different types of plants in a botanical garden and concluded that
plants can be classified in various ways based on the
Plants
nature of their stems. He created a flow chart to
represent his observations. Some plants have soft,
X ____Plants Woody Plants
green stems, while others have hard, woody stems.
Woody plants can further be classified into shrubs and
Y Shrubs
trees, depending on their size and branching pattern.
Look at the flow chart and answer the following
Z
questions.
i. Identify the correct terms for X, Y, and Z.
ii. Write one difference between Shrubs and group "Z” based on their branches.
iii. Give one example each of a plant with Y and Z.
11. Have you noticed that a cactus plant doesn’t have noticeable
leaves, but its stem is thick, green, and fleshy? Cactus plants grow
in hot and dry regions like deserts, where water is scarce. To
survive in such extreme conditions, they have developed special
features. One of the most noticeable adaptations is the absence
of leaves and the unique role of their stem.
a) In what kind of climate do you usually find cactus plants.
i. Cold and snowy
