SUBJECT : Mathematics
CH: 10 -The other side of zero
SUBTOPIC: Basic Knowledge
Recall that the very first numbers we learned about in the study of mathematics were
the counting numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, … Then we learned that there are even more numbers!
For example, there is the number 0 (zero), representing nothing, which comes before
1. We then learned about more numbers that exist between the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4,
… , such as 1/2 , 3/2 , and 13/6 . These are called fractions. But are there still more
numbers?
Can there be a number less than 0?
The numbers less than zero are the negative intgers.
There are negative numbers also exist. If we put the whole numbers and the negative
numbers together, the new collection of numbers will look like -4,-3,-2,-1, 0, 1,2,3,4
and so on. This collection of numbers is known as Integers.
In this collection, numbers above zero are 1, 2, 3...are said to be positive integers
and numbers below zero – 1, – 2, – 3 ... are said to be negative integers.
