Accord des Adjectifs: (Agreement of Adjectives)
MASCULINE TO FEMINNINE SINGULAR TO PLURAL
1. Generally, an “E” is added to the masculine form in order to make an adjective
feminine.
Masculine singular: Feminine singular Grand + e Grande ( tall/big)
Haut + e haute (high)
Court + e courte (short)
2. If the masculine form of the adjectives ends with vowel “E” then it remains same in
the feminine form.
Masculine singular: Feminine singular
Jeune = Jeune (Young)
Rouge = rouge (red)
Belge = belge (belgian)
Facile = facile (easy)
3. The feminine of certain adjectives is formed by doubling the consonant of the
masculine form and then added E.
Masculine singular: Feminine singular
Gros + se = grosse (fat)
Bas + se = basse (low)
Bon + ne = bonne (good)
ancien + ne = ancienne (old)
4. Adjectives ending with “eau” in the masculine form will change to “elle” to get
their feminine form:
Masculine singular: Feminine singular
Beau = belle (beautiful)
Nouveau = nouvelle (new)
Note: Adjective like beau, nouveau, vieux change to bel, nouvel, and vieil when used before
a masculine singular .
1. In most of the cases, an adjective is made plural by adding ‘S’ to its singular form.
For Ex:
Singular : plural Grand + = grands
Large + s = larges
Haut + s = Hauts
2. If an adjective already ends with “S” in its masculine singular form, there is a no change in plural form.
