LN- Compass and Directions
Learning Objectives:
Students should be able to
• Identify the four main (cardinal) directions: North, East, South, and West.
• Recognize the intermediate directions: North-East, South-East, South-West, and
North-West.
• Use a simple compass or directional clues to find or give directions.
• Apply directional language in everyday situations and map reading.
What is a Compass?
• A compass is a tool used to find directions.
• It has a needle that always points to the North.
Cardinal Directions (The Four Main Directions):
1. North (N)
2. East (E)
3. South (S)
4. West (W)
Remember: You can use the phrase “Never Eat Soggy
Waffles” to help remember the order – North, East, South, West
(going clockwise).
Intermediate Directions (The Four In-Between Directions):
1. North-East (NE) – between North and East
2. South-East (SE) – between South and East
3. South-West (SW) – between South and West
4. North-West (NW) – between North and West
Why are Directions Important?
• They help us find places.
