LN- Composing Numbers
Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to:
• Understand the place value of digits in 4-digit and 5-digit numbers.
• Read and write numbers in standard form and expanded form.
• Compose numbers from expanded form into standard form.
• Decompose numbers from standard form into expanded form.
Key Concept:
What is Composing Numbers?
Composing a number means putting together the value of each digit (place value parts) to
form the full or standard form of the number.
Two Forms of Numbers:
1. Expanded Form – shows the value of each digit.
o Example: 3,482 = 3,000 + 400 + 80 + 2
2. Standard Form – the usual way we write numbers.
o Example: 3,000 + 400 + 80 + 2 = 3,482
4-Digit Numbers – Examples
Expanded Form: 4,000 + 500 + 60 + 7
Composed (Standard Form): 4,567
Expanded Form: 1,000 + 300 + 0 + 9
Composed (Standard Form): 1,309
