LN- Counting Back and Sequence
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
1. Understand the concept of counting back as a method of subtraction.
2. Count back from any number within 1000 using 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s, and 100s.
3. Identify and complete number sequences that go backwards.
4. Recognize patterns in backward sequences and describe the rule (e.g., -2, -5, -10).
5. Use counting back to solve simple subtraction problems mentally or using number
lines.
What is Counting Back?
Counting back means saying numbers in reverse order (going backwards).
We use it when we subtract or when we want to know what number comes before.
How Do We Count Back?
You can count back in:
• 1s → 20, 19, 18, 17, ...
• 2s → 30, 28, 26, 24, ...
• 5s → 50, 45, 40, 35, ...
• 10s → 100, 90, 80, 70, ...
• 100s → 900, 800, 700, ...
Example:
Start at 35. Count back in 1s.
35, 34, 33, 32, 31, 30
Start at 60. Count back in 10s.
60, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10
