LN- DIRECT SPEECH
Lesson Objective
By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:
• Identify and write direct speech correctly using quotation marks, commas, and capital
letters.
Introduction
Begin with a short explanation:
"Direct speech is when we write or say the exact words someone says. We use quotation
marks (“ ”) to show the speaker’s words."
Example:
Sarah said, “I love reading books.”
Main Teaching Points
1. Quotation Marks go around the speaker’s exact words.
2. Comma before the spoken words if the speaker is mentioned first.
o Example: John said, “I am hungry.”
3. Capital Letter starts the first word inside the quotation marks.
4. If the sentence ends with the spoken words, place the period inside the quotation
marks.
o Example: “Let’s go to the park,” said Maya.
Activity
Small Group Activity:
Provide cut-out dialogue cards. Each card has a sentence without punctuation.
Example:
mike said i like ice cream
Students will:
• Rewrite it correctly using punctuation and capital letters:
Mike said, “I like ice cream.”
You can also turn this into a fun matching game—match the speaker and their correct quote.
