                                            LN- DIGGING FOR MEANING

               Lesson Objective:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify the main idea and key details in a
               simple news story.

               Materials:

                   • Printed short news articles (kid-friendly)

                   • Whiteboard and markers

                   • Highlighters or crayons

                   • Graphic organizer (Main Idea & Details chart)

               Lesson Introduction:

                   • Begin by asking students: “What is the news? Where do we get news from?”

                   • Briefly explain that news tells us what is happening in the world around us and that
each news story has a main idea and details.

               Main Activity:

               Activity: News Detective

                   1. Hand out a short news article (e.g., about a school event, animal rescue, or weather
                       report).

                   2. Guide the class in reading the article together.

                   3. Using a Main Idea & Details chart, model how to find:

o The main idea (What is this article mostly about?)

o Three supporting details (facts or ideas that explain more about the main idea).

                   4. Let students work in pairs to highlight the main idea and underline key details in
                       another short article.

               Conclusion:

                   • Ask volunteers to share what they discovered.

                   • Reinforce that being a "news detective" helps us understand what we read and what’s
                       important.
