LN- Fractions of quantities and numbers
Learning objective: Students will be able to understand and apply fractions to find
parts of quantities and numbers in real-life contexts.
What are Fractions?
Fractions represent parts of a whole.
A fraction has two parts:
o Numerator: The top number shows how
many parts we have.
o Denominator: The bottom number shows
how many equal parts the whole is
divided into.
Finding Fractions of a Quantity
To find a fraction of a quantity, we divide the quantity by the denominator and
then multiply the result by the numerator.
Formula: Fraction of a Quantity = (Quantity ÷ Denominator) × Numerator
Example: Find 1/4 of 20 apples.
o Solution:
Divide the total apples by the
denominator: 20 apples ÷ 4 = 5
apples
Multiply the result by the numerator:
5 apples × 1 = 5 apples
Thus, 1/4 of 20 apples is 5 apples.
