LM – Count on and back by 10 and 100
Learning objective: Students will learn to count forward (on) and
backward (back) by 10s and 100s from any given number, recognizing
patterns in place value to add or subtract efficiently.
What is Counting On and Back?
Counting on means adding to the
current number.
Counting back means subtracting from
the current number.
Counting On and Back by 10
When counting on by 10, only the Tens place changes.
Example: 45 → 55 → 65 → 75 (adding 10 each time).
When counting back by 10, subtract 10 and the Tens place
decreases.
Example: 75 → 65 → 55 → 45 (subtracting 10 each time).
Counting On and Back by 100
When counting on by 100, only the Hundreds place changes.
Example: 345 → 445 → 545 → 645 (adding 100 each time).
When counting back by 100, subtract 100and the Hundreds place
decreases.
Example: 645 → 545 → 445 → 345 (subtracting 100 each
time).
Counting on and back helps with addition, subtraction, and
understanding patterns in numbers.
