Learning objective: Students will learn to add and subtract fractions with
the same denominators to solve real-world problems.
What Are Fractions?
A fraction represents a part of a whole. It has two parts:
o Numerator: The number of parts taken.
o Denominator: The total number of parts.
Key Steps to Solve Fraction Word Problems:
o Read the Problem Carefully: Understand what is being asked.
o Identify the Fractions: Note the fractions given in the problem.
o Find the Operation: Decide whether to add, subtract, multiply,
or divide the fractions.
o Solve the Problem: Use the appropriate method for the
operation.
Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Same Denominators:
o Keep the denominator the same.
o Add or subtract the numerators directly.
o Simplify the fraction if needed.
Steps for Fractions with Different Denominators:
o Find the least common denominator (LCD).
o Convert the fractions to have the same denominator.
o Perform the addition or subtraction.
