c) Efforts of labour are not equivalent in all the sector.
                            d) D. None of these.
4 Choose one correct statement from the following: 1
                         Underemployment occurs —
                            a) when people are not willing to work.
                            b) when people are working slowly.
                            c) when people are working less than what they are capable of
                            d) doing.
                            e) d. when people are not paid for their jobs.
5 Explain the meaning of primary sector. Mention any four economic 2
                         activities of this sector.
6 What does the history of developed countries indicate about the shifts that 2
                         have taken place between sectors?
7 Suggest two measures to generate more employment opportunities in 2
                         semi-rural areas.
8 In what ways can employment be increased in urban areas? 2
9 How is tertiary sector different from other sectors? Give examples. 3
10 How would income and employment increase if farmers are provided 3
with loan, irrigation and transportation facilities?
11 The problem of underemployment is not confined only to agriculture. 3
                         Support the statement with examples.
12 Another way by which we can tackle this problem is to identify, promote 4
and locate industries and services in semi-rural areas where a large
number of people may be employed. For instance, suppose many farmers
decide to grow arhar and chickpea (pulse crops). Setting up a dal mill to
procure and process these and sell in the cities is one such example.
Opening a cold storage could give an opportunity for farmers to store
their products like potatoes and onions and sell them when the price is
good. In villages near forest areas, we can start honey collection centres
where farmers can come and sell wild honey. It is also possible to set up
industries that process vegetables and agricultural produce like potato,
sweet potato, rice, wheat, tomato, fruits, which can be sold in outside
markets. This will provide employment in industries located in semi-rural
areas and not necessarily in large urban centres.

                         Answer the following questions. 1+1+2=4
12.1 How can the problem of employment in semi-rural areas be
                         addressed, according to the passage?
12.2 Provide an example of an industry mentioned in the passage that
could be established in response to the agricultural activities of farmers.
12.3 How does the proposed approach in the passage contribute to
employment generation in semi-rural areas as opposed to large urban
                         centres?
13 Explain why service sector is gaining more importance in the global 5
                         economy.
