                                                LESSON NOTES-2.1
                                             SUBJECT: Mathematics

        CH-2: EXPRESSIONS, FORMULAE AND EQUATIONS

        SUBTOPIC: 2.1 Constructing expressions

        Outline of learning content:
 Understand that letters have different meanings in expressions, formulae, and equations.
 Understand that order of operations (BIDMAS) rules apply to algebraic terms and expressions.
 Understand that a situation can be represented either in words or as an algebraic expression

        KEYS WORDS:

                    .Coefficient: A number in front of a variable in an algebraic expression;

                       the coefficient multiplies the variable.

Ex- Coefficient of 54xy is 54.

 Constant: a number on its own (with no variable); −5, 8 and 10 are all

constants, but so is π as this is also just a number.

                    Equivalent: equal in value

                       Ex – 2(n+1) = 2n + 2

 Expression: a collection of symbols representing numbers and

mathematical operations, but not including an equals sign (=).

 Linear expression: an expression, with at least one variable, where the

highest power of any variable is 1.

                       Example – 5x + 10, 4x + 8y +12

 Solve: calculate the value of any unknown letter(s) in an equation

 Term: a single number or variable, or numbers and variables multiplied

                       together.

 Unknown: a letter (or letters) in an equation, for which the value (or

values) is yet to be found
