Food chains, food webs and energy transfers

               1. What is a Food Chain?

A food chain shows how energy moves from one living thing to another when they eat.
It starts with a producer and ends with a top consumer.

               2. Parts of a Food Chain

                        Part Role Example

Producer Makes its own food using sunlight Grass
               Primary Consumer Eats producers Grasshopper
Secondary Consumer Eats primary consumers Frog
Tertiary Consumer Eats secondary consumers Snake

               3. What is a Food Web?

A food web is a group of many connected food chains.
It shows how animals can eat different plants or animals.

               4. Energy Transfer

 Energy from the sun is used by producers (plants) to make food.
 Energy moves through the food chain as animals eat plants and other animals.
 Energy decreases at each level because some energy is lost as heat or used for life
                       activities.

               5. Why Are Food Chains and Webs Important?

 They show how all living things depend on each other.
 They help us understand the balance in nature.
 If one part changes, it can affect many others.
