Grammaire :
LE CONDINTIONNEL PRESENT (the conditional present)
It is used to express a wish or a suggestion, to make a equest, or to accept or
extend invitations. It is less direct and more polite than the imperative.
The verbs ‘pouvoir’, and ‘vouloir’, and ‘devoir’ are often found in the
conditional to diminish the strength of a command. In most cases, the
conditional is translated as ‘would’ in English. However, ‘je pourrais’ means ‘I
could’, ‘je devrais’ means ‘I should’ and ‘je voudrais’ means ‘I would like’.
Eg. a) Aimeriez-vous du café Madame ?
(Would you like some coffee madam?)
b) Pourriez-vous me dire quelle heure il est ?
(Could you tell me what time it is ?)
FORMATION
Take the radical of future/ future stem (part that remain after removing the
endings ) and then add the ending of imparfait.
Eg. Take the verb venir( i.e viendrai with ‘je’) now remove the ending (ai),
therefore ‘viendr’ is left and is known as the radicle of future(future stem).
