P. 2
Solutions: A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more non reacting
substances.
Binary solution: A solution which has only two components is called a binary solution.
Components of a binary solution:
Solution = Solute + Solvent
Solute: It is the component which is dissolved in a medium (solvent). It is present in a
smaller proportion.
Solvent: It is the medium which dissolves the solute. It is present in a larger proportion.
Properties of true solutions:
• A solution is homogeneous in nature.
-9
• The solute particles in a solution are smaller than 1nm (Nanometer) 1 nm= 10 m.
• A solution can pass through an ordinary filter paper.
• The particles of a true solution are not visible to naked eye not even through a
microscope.
• A true solution is always stable as the solute particles do not settle at the bottom.
• A solution is transparent may be colourless or coloured.
• The true solutions do not show Tyndall effect as the particles are extremely small
and the can not scatter the light.
