Module-31, The Beggar by Anton Chekhov
1-Introduction of the Lesson:
‘The Beggar’ written by Anton Chekov is the story of the transformation
of a beggar into a good person. The behaviour of a woman made him
leave alcohol and lead a good life.This story is about a person who was
a drunkard. His name was Lushkoff. An advocate named Sergei offers
him work at his house in order to make him stop begging and in order
to make him able to feed himself by working. But he was showing his
unwillingness to chop wood as it was a very laborious work. Somehow
he manages to do the work and stopped begging. After some years,
when Sergei meets Lushkoff; Sergei was surprised to see that Lushkoff
was not a beggar anymore instead now he is a notary.
2-Lesson and Explanation:
“KIND sir, have pity; turn your attention to a poor, hungry man! For three
days I have had nothing to eat; I haven‟t five copecks for lodging, I
swear it before God. For eight years I was a village schoolteacher and
then I lost my place through intrigues. I fell a victim to calumny. It is a
year now since I have had anything to do.”
Copecks: Russian coin equal to one hundredth of a rouble
Intrigues: make secret plans to do something illicit or detrimental to
someone
Calumny: the making of false and defamatory statements about
someone in order to damage his/her reputation
