While the courts action solved are problem it created another, many worker’s
lost their jobs. Many were forced to go to faraway places where these
factories had relocated, and these areas also got polluted.
The issue of safety conditions of worker’s remained unaddressed.
Research of environmental issues in India had highlighted the fact that the
growing concern on environment is often at the expense of the poor.
i) A city’s beautification is important so should have to be cleaned.
ii) A polluting factory had to be moved to the outskirts.
All these environmental issues only affect the livelihood of the poor.
Thus the challenge is to look for solutions where everyone can benefit from a
clean environment and employment is safeguarded.
This can happen if we gradually move to cleaner technologies in factories.
The government has to encourage and support these factories.
It will need to fine polluting industries.
This will ensure livelihoods are protected and both workers and communities
living around factories enjoy a safe environment.
Conclusion-:
Laws are necessary to protect people from unfair practices in markets, offices
or factories.
They can be exploited in the following ways
i) Paying low wages.
ii) Employing children in work places.
iii) Ignoring conditions of work.
iv) Ignoring damage to the environment and hence people in the
neighbourhood.
Therefore a major role of the government is to control the activities of private
companies and ensure social justice.
The government plays an important role in this respect.
Protecting the environment is a public cause and the courts have upheld the
right to a healthy environment as intrinsic to the Right to Life.
