For the past 200 years Adivasis have been increasingly forced through
economic changes, forest policies and political force applied by the state and
private industry.
They are today working in plantations, at construction sites, in industries and
as domestic workers. For the first time they do not have access to forest
territories.
Forests have been cleared for timber and for agriculture and industry.
Adivasi land is also rich in minerals and other natural resources.
Much of the time tribal land is taken away forcefully and procedures are not
followed.
Official figures state that 50% of persons displaced due to mining projects are
tribal.
Huge tracts of their land have gone under the water of hundreds of dams.
In the North East tribal land remains militarised and war torn.
Tribal land has gone in the making of 54 national parks and 372 wild life
sanctuaries.
They have migrated to the cities and working at construction cities at very low wages
and have become very poor. Their children are malnourished and their literacy levels
are low.
