Notes
NOTES
Adivasis and Stereotyping -:
Adivasis are invariably portrayed in very stereotypical ways – in colorful
costumes, head gear and through their dancing.
This often wrongly leads people to believe that they are exotic, primitive and
backward.
They are believed to be resistant to change and this may lead to their
marginalization.
Adivasis and Development -:
Forests are important for the development of all empires and settled
civilisations in India.
Metal ores like iron and copper, gold and silver, coal and diamonds, timber,
medicinal herbs and Animal products, wax, lac, honey and elephants all came
from forests.
The continuation of life depended heavily on forests and the recharge of many
rivers.
The Adivasis had a deep knowledge of the forests and till the middle of the
nineteenth century they were not ruled by the empires but the empires
depended heavily on them for crucial forest resources.
Today Adivasis are somewhat marginalised and powerless community.
In the pre–colonial period they were hunter gatherers and nomads and lived
by shifting agriculture.
