Characteristics of hormones:

 They act on specific target organ
 Reach target organ through blood
 They are secreted in very small amounts.
 The hormones involved in the development and control of the reproductive
organs and secondary sexual characteristics are called sex hormones.
 Examples-testosterone (in males), estrogen (in females)

Role of hormones in initiating the Reproductive Function

 The part of the body, for which a particular hormone is meant, is called the
Target Site.
 The endocrine glands secrete the hormones in the blood which then reach the
target site. The target site then responds accordingly.
