AVOIR OR ETRE ?
Now this you have understood that the auxiliary verb (avoir/etre)is used to make passé
compose but the confusion is that where to put either of the verb. Therefore ,in most
circumstances ,the auxiliary verb is avoir. However ,with certain verbs, the auxiliary verb is
etre . This occurs under two different circumstances:
1. Pronomial or Reflexive verbs are always conjugated with the auxiliary etre.
• Je me suis parlé. (I spoke to myself)
• Il s’est levé de bonne heure.(He got up early)
2. The House of etre : Most verbs forms passé compose with avoir ,however there are
a small number of verbs ,which show movement of the subject from one place to
another ,are always conjugated with etre .Seventeen special intransitive verbs take
etre ( six of which can also take avoir, as explained below).
Verbs that take ETRE in the passé compose
▪ Devenir (to become) - devenu rentrer (to re-enter/go home)-
rentré
▪ Mourir(to die) - mort venir(to come)- venu
▪ Sortir(to go out) - sorti partir(to leave)- parti
▪ Monter(to climb) - monté naitre(to be born)- né
▪ Aller(to go) - allé arrive(to arrive)- arrivé
▪ Descendre(to get down) - descendu tomber(to fall)- tombé
▪ Entrer(to enter) - entré retourner(to return)- retourné
▪ Rester(to stay)- resté
▪ Revenir(to come back)- revenu
▪ Passer (to pass by)- passé
The verb conjugated with ‘etre’ in passé compose in three forms:
Affirmative: Sub+Etre in present +Past Participle
Je suis allé(e). Nous somme allé(e)s.
Tu es allé (e). Vous êtes allé(e)(s)*.
Il/On est allé. Il sont allés.
Elle est allée. Elles sont allées
Negative : Sub + ne/n’+ être in présent +pas +Past Participle
Je ne suis pas allé(e). Nous ne sommes pas allé(e)s.
Tu n’es pas allé(e). Vous n’êtes pas allé(e)(s)*.
