CHAPTER-11: Area and Perimeter
LESSON NOTES-6
SUBTOPIC: Conversion of Units and its Applications
Conversion of Units: Conversion of units is the conversion between different
units of measurement for the same quantity.
Here, we convert different units while measuring areas to another unit.
We know that 1 m = 100 cm
2
Now 1 m = 1 m x 1 m
2
= 100 cm x 100 cm = 10000 cm
1 km = 1000 m
2
1 km = 1 km x 1 km
= 1000 m x 1000 m
= 1000000 m 2
2
2
1 hectare = 100 × 100 m = 10,000 m
100 cm = 1 m
1
1 cm = m
100
2
1 cm = 1 cm x 1 cm
1 1
= m x m
100 100

= m

2
1000 cm = 1000 m = 0.1 m 2

2
1000 cm = 1000 × 100 mm
= 100000 mm 2

Applications in real life: You must have observed that quite often, in gardens
or parks, some space is left all around in the form of path or in between as cross
paths.
A framed picture has some space left all around it.
We need to find the areas of such pathways or borders when we want to find
the cost of making them.
