               ADAPTATION

The adjustment or changes in the behaviour, physiology and structure of an organism to suit

an environment is known as Adaptation.
               DIFFERENT REGIONS OF EARTH

               • Equatorial region- The region around the equator. It experiences maximum sunlight

               • Tropical region- The region surrounding the equatorial region.
               • Polar region – Extremely cold climatic conditions. Most common animals found in these

regions are polar bears and penguins. Others like fishes, birds, oxen, musk deer,

reindeers, foxes, whales and seals are also found.

ADAPTIVE FEATURES OF ANIMALS LIVING IN POLAR REGION
                   A. POLAR BEAR

                   • The thick white fur also helps to keep
                                                                 DO YOU KNOW!
their body warm and also helps in A polar bear skin is actually black in colour.
camouflaging as it blends with white

                       snow.

                   • The blubber, a thick layer of fat present under the skin acts as an insulator.

                   • The paws are large and wide and help in swimming as well as walking on the snow.
                   • The polar bear can swim underwater as well because it can keep its nostrils closed

                       for a long time.

                   B. PENGUINS

                   • The thick layer of blubber present under
the feather keeps the body warm. DO YOU KNOW!
A group of penguins in the water is called
                   • The penguin has a thick layer of stiff and a raft but on land they’re called a waddle!

densely packed feathers that blocks the

cold waters from reaching its skin while swimming.
                   • The streamlined body, webbed feet and flippers that help to swim smoothly in

                       water.
