Types of Soil:
Soil can be classified into three major categories on the basis of the size and
proportion of the particles present in it.
Sandy Soil:
This type of soil is formed from rocks like limestone, granite and shale.
It contains more than 60% sand and less than 10% clay.
Particles are easily visible and have a gritty structure.
This soil can hold air but water-holding capacity is very less.
This soil is not used for growing crops but it is used for construction of
buildings with cementing material.
Clayey Soil:
This soil contains about 60% clay and has fine particles.
The water retaining capacity of the soil is high but it cannot hold air to help the
plant roots to breathe.
It is used for pottery and making bricks.
Loamy Soil:
It contains 40% sand, 20% clay, 40% silt and humus.
The size of the particles varies between that of sand and clay.
This soil can hold air as well as water.
It is the best soil for farming and gardening.
