Functions of the roots:

                   •  Roots help in the absorption of water and mineral salts from the soil for the plant.
                   •  The root anchors the plant firmly in the soil which prevents them from falling on to the
                       ground or being blown away by strong winds.

               Modifications of the root:
                   •  In addition to the normal functions, the roots of some plants also perform some special
                       functions to suit the requirements of the plant.
                   •  Modified roots are roots which change their structures to adapt to their environment.

                   a)  Modification of the root for food storage: Some plants store excess food in the roots to tide

                       over unfavourable conditions. These roots are mostly tap roots and edible, Examples of such
                       roots are carrots, radish, turnip etc.
                   b)   Modification of the root for extra support:
                   •  Prop roots support the heavy branches of the banyan tree.
                   •   Stilt roots support the weak stems of the maize plan.t
                   •  Climbing roots in Black pepper and money plant help these plants to climb up on a support.
