                                                   LESSON NOTES

               Managing Biodegradable waste

Biodegradable waste consists of substances that can be decomposed by small micro-
               organisms.
Two important methods used for biodegradable waste management are composting
               and land-filling.

               Composting:
Compost is the organic material broken
down and recycled by decomposers and is
used as a manure to enrich soil. Micro-
               organisms/decomposers convert the organic
               materials into earthy, dark, crumbly
               substances called compost.
The process of composting involves burying
of biodegradable substances in compost pits.
One type of composting is vermicomposting.
This involves addition of red worms to the
compost pits. The worms act on the waste
and degrade them into nutrient-rich manure
               in 3-4 weeks.

               Land-filling:
Land-filling is a method of disposing waste
by burying it. This is an age-old garbage
disposal method. It should be seen that the
disposal area should not bring about any
environmental hazard. The filled land can be
used to develop a park or a playground.
