                                                   LESSON NOTES

               Managing Non-biodegradable Waste

Non-biodegradable waste cannot be decomposed by the action of decomposers. They
have to be disposed off differently. The waste management strategy advises the use of
5Rs which has now taken the place of 3R.

Refuse: Do not buy things that we actually do not need.
Reduce: Reduce means using less and producing less waste. This involves wise and
limited use of resources to generate less waste.
Reuse: Reuse is a good method of reducing garbage. Materials can be reused either to
serve its original purpose or for an entirely different purpose.
Recycle: Used articles can be recycled to make completely different items with the
knowledge of technology. This reduces the production of excess waste.
Reform: The waste that are hard to recycle into new products can be used to extract
the raw materials in them through complex chemical processes. These materials can be
               used to make new products.
