What is Waste?
Anything that is eliminated or discarded as it is no longer useful or required after the
completion of a process is known as waste.
It is also known as garbage, trash, rubbish or junk.
Types of Waste:
Waste can be of different types:
Household waste: The waste generated by people at homes. This includes leftover
food, vegetable peels, wrapping materials, tins, cans, domestic sewage.
Industrial waste: The waste generated by industries. This includes plastics, chemicals,
metal scraps.
Agricultural waste: The waste generated on agricultural farms. This includes fertilizers,
husk and chaff.
Solid waste: Solid waste is generally known as garbage. It consists of food wrappers,
fruit and vegetable peels, fallen leaves etc. Solid waste can be classified broadly into
two types- biodegradable and non-biodegradable.
Liquid waste: Dirty water from our houses, run-off water from agricultural farms
containing chemical fertilizers, waste water from industries make up the liquid waste.
Gaseous waste: Exhausts of vehicles, smoke and harmful gases from factories, burning
paper, plastic, coal produce harmful gases adding to gaseous waste.
