Sub-Topic – Atmosphere, Properties Of Air

                                                     Lesson Notes

         What is atmosphere?
The blanket of air surrounding the surface of the earth is called the atmosphere.
It extends to a height of about 500 km above the earth surface.
It helps us in many ways.

          • It protects us from harmful UV rays.
          • It provides oxygen to all living organisms.

          • It is responsible for the water cycle in nature.
          • It maintains the proper temperature
         Properties of air
              Air is invisible:-
          1. Air is a colourless gas. So we cannot see air but we feel its presence. The movement
of leaves of trees indicates the presence of air.
              Moving air is called wind.
          2. Air is matter- Anything having mass and occupies space is matter.
          3. Air has mass-

Activity to prove that air has mass.

Materials required- Two balloons, a stick, thread
Method- Blow both the balloons roughly with an equal amount of air.

With the help of thread tie them at the two ends of the stick.

Tie a thread at the middle and hold the stick to balance both the sides.

Now burst one of the balloons.

Observation- The end with the filled balloon comes down.

Inference- The balloon with air has more weight than the balloon without air. So we
              conclude that air has mass.
