➢ Characteristics of Chemical Changes:

           •  One or more new substances are formed.
           •  There is a change in the chemical composition and chemical properties of the given

              substance (reactant).

           •  The new substance formed (product) formed, has a totally different composition and
              properties than that of the original substance.

           •  They are permanent and usually cannot be reversed.

           •  A permanent change in colour may take place.
           •  A lot of energy (heat) is absorbed or released.

           •  Light and sound may be produced in a chemical change. E.g., bursting of firecrackers.

        ➢ Remember, the appearance of matter as well as the chemical identity changes during a
           chemical change.
