P. 2

1. SEDIMENTATION AND DECANTATION

 When water containing insoluble impurities is left undisturbed for some
time, the heavier impurities settle down at the bottom. This process is
                   known as sedimentation.
 As a result, clear water remains on the top, which can be poured into a
separate container. This is called decantation.

                         Sedimentation Decantation

               2. FILTRATION

 In filtration, the insoluble impurities
present in water are removed by

passing the impure water through a
                   filter paper.
 For example, if we pass a mixture of
sand and water through a filter paper
placed in a funnel, then water will
pass trough filter paper. This water
can be collected in a flask.

 Sand, being unable to pass through
the fine pores of the filter paper, stays
                   behind on the paper.
