Page 2 - 11.1 THE MOON INTRODUCTION
P. 2
On earth, these meteorites burn up in our atmosphere before they reach the
ground. But this orb of night has no atmosphere, so it is covered with large craters.
CONDITIONS ON THE MOON
There is no atmosphere to protect its surface from the ravages of cosmic radiation,
solar wind and micrometeorite impacts.
As a result, the Moon's surface is covered with a thin layer of fine, charged, reactive
dust capable of entering habitats and vehicle compartments, where it can cause
crewmember health problems.
The temperature of moon is very extreme. The side of the Moon faces the sun is
110degree Celsius where the away part receives a temperature of -150 degree
Celsius.
The sky of the Moon is always dark.
As there is no air, so sound cannot be heard on the Moon.
The gravitational force of the Moon is one -sixth of that of the Earth. Because of the
this, the weight of any object on Moon is one sixth times less than that of the Earth.
