P. 3
Example 3: Hema takes 4 minutes 15 seconds to skip 200 times. How many
seconds is that?
Answer: Time taken by Hema to skip = 4 minutes 15 seconds
We know that 1 minute = 60 seconds
So, 4 minutes + 15 seconds = 4 x 60 seconds +15 seconds
= 240 seconds + 15 seconds
= 255 seconds
Therefore, Hema takes 255 seconds to skip 200 times.
Example 4: Ajay started his evening walk at 6:30 p.m. What time will it be
3 hours after the walk?
Answer: Time at which Ajay starts his walk = 6:30 p.m.
Converting the 12-hour clock to 24-hour clock we get
6:30 p.m. = 18:30 hours (on adding 12 hours to given time)
Therefore, 3 hours after the walk is 18:30 hours + 3 hours = 21:30 hours, that is
9:30 p.m. (21:30 hours – 12 hours, in order to get the 12-hour clock time).
Example 5: Suman woke up at 6:30 a.m. every day and slept 8 hours 40
minutes in previous night. At what time did she go to bed?
Answer: Time at which Suman woke up = 6:30 a.m.in the morning
40 minutes before 6:30 a.m. = 5:50 a.m. in the morning
Let us break 8 hours into 5 hours and 3 hours.
Now, 5 hours before 5:50 a.m. = 12:50 a.m. after midnight
and 3 hours before 12:50 a.m. = 9: 50 p.m. in the previous night.
Therefore, Suman went to bed at 9:50 p.m. in the previous night.
