P. 2

Example 2: A train started from Delhi at 9:50 a.m. and reached Kanpur at
2:30 p.m. Find the duration of the train journey.

Answer: Here we have one time is in a.m. and other is in p.m.

                               9:50 a.m. 12 noon 2:30 p.m.

               Method I:

                9:50 a.m. 10:00 a.m. 12:00 noon 2:00 p.m. 2:30 p.m.

                               10 min + 2h + 2h + 30 min

So, the total time elapsed is 4h 40 min.

               Method II:

Converting the given time into 24-hour clock we have,

                                       9: 50 a.m. = 09:50 hours

                    and 2:30 p.m. = 14: 30 hours

                                                     Hour Min
                                                         13 90
                                                         14 30
                                                     - 09 50

                                                          4 40

               Step 1: 30 min < 50 minutes

So borrow 1 hour from 14 hours and change it into minutes.

                           60 minutes + 30 minutes = 90 minutes

                           Subtract minutes.

                           90 minutes – 50 minutes = 40 minutes

               Step 2: Subtract hours.

                           13 hours – 9 hours = 4 hours

Therefore, required answer is 4 hours and 40 minutes.

                                                                                                  Page | 2
