Topic – TIME
Sub topic – Conversion of time – bigger to smaller
The clocks have three hands, the minute hand, the hour hand and the seconds
hand.
The seconds hand takes 1 minute to go round the clock-face once. The
time taken by the seconds hand to move from one small division to the
next is called a second.
There are 60 seconds in a minute.
Therefore, 1 minute = 60 seconds.
The minute hand takes 1 hour to go round the clock-face once. The time
taken by the minute hand to move from one marking to the next
marking is called a minute.
There are 60 minutes in a hour.
Therefore, 1 hour = 60 minutes.
It takes 24 hours to complete one day.
Therefore, 1 day = 24 hours.
The order of units of time is as follows:
Seconds < Minutes < Hours < Days < Weeks
In order to convert the units of time from a higher to smaller unit we have to
follow the following steps:
a) To convert minutes to seconds multiply by 60.
b) To convert hours to minutes multiply by 60.
c) To convert days to hours multiply by 24.
d) To convert weeks to days multiply by 7.
