TYPES OF GROUPS

               1.  PRIMARY GROUP

                   ▪  Pre-existing formations which are usually given to the individual.
                   ▪  Example- Family, caste, religion
                   ▪  There is a face-to-face interaction
                   ▪  Members have close proximity
                   ▪  They share warm emotional bonds
               2.  SECONDARY GROUP
                   ▪  Groups which individuals join by choice.
                   ▪  Examples- membership of a political party.

                   ▪  Easy to leave and join another group.
               3.  FORMAL GROUP
                   ▪  Functions are explicitly stated.
                   ▪  Examples, Office organisation or University
                   ▪  Roles to be performed are definite.
                   ▪  Formation is based on some specific rules and laws.
               4.  INFORMAL GROUP
                   ▪  Functions are not stated.
                   ▪  Close relationship among members.
                   ▪  Example, Friends Group
                   ▪  Not based on rules or laws.
               5.  IN GROUP
                   ▪  Refers to one’s own group
                   ▪  The word “we” is used.
                   ▪  Generally members supposed to be similar,
                   ▪  Members viewed favourably and
                   ▪  Members have desirable traits.
                   ▪  boundaries are less permeable.
               6.  OUT GROUP
                   ▪  Refers to another group
                   ▪  The word “they” is used.
                   ▪  Generally members supposed to be viewed differently,
                   ▪  Perceived negatively.
