                                     Counter movements sometimes arise in defense of status
                                       quo. There  are many instances of counter movement.


                                    When Raja Rammohun Roy campaigned against sati formed
                                     the Brahmo Samaj, defenders of sati formed Dharma Sabha
                                        and petitioned the British not to legislate against sati.
