                       Cultural Change


                   ❖ Cultural change refers to the change in customs, traditions, beliefs,

                       lifestyle, behaviour etc. (We got inspired by the British clothes, etc)
                   ❖ Cultural change is the way in which societies change their patterns of
                       culture.
                   ❖ Impact of British on our culture, values, norms, basically any impact or

                       change on the cultural side. Change in aspects of daily life.
                   ❖ Cultural changes during colonial rule can be understood at two levels:

                       a) Efforts of social reformers and nationalists
                       b) Indirect-influence of four processes- Sanskritisation, Modernisation,
                       secularisation and westernisation

                       Social Reform Movements in the 19  and Early 20   Century
                                                                                              th
                   ➢  The social reform movements which emerged in India in the 19  Century
                       arose to the challenges that colonial Indian Society faced.

                   ➢  The well known issues or the social evils that played Indian Society were
                   1)  Sati
                   2)  Child Marriage
                   3)  Caste Discrimination

                   ➢  The attempts were central to Buddhism, to Bhakti and Sufi Movements.

                   ➢  The 19  century social reform attempts was the modern context and
                       mix of ideas.
                   ➢  It was a creative combination of modern ideas of western liberalism and
                       a new look on traditional literature.
