P. 3

Protecting the ozone layer
 The ozone layer must be protected.
 For this, the use of CFCs has to be stopped.
 We must buy products that are labelled “Ozone-friendly” or “CFC Free”
 Substitutes for CFCs to be used
 HCFCs (Hydrochlorofluorocarbons) are substitutes for CFCs

Damage to the ozone layer can cause the following-
                    Skin cancer
                    Cataract
 Suppression of the immune system
 Premature aging of the skin

               Managing the garbage we produce
The household waste is called garbage. Some of the garbage is biodegradable and
some are nonbiodegradable. Garbage causes pollution of air, water and soil. So, it
               should be disposed properly.
Some of the methods of garbage disposal are :-
                 i) Land fills

                ii) Recycling
iii) Production of biogas and manure
               iv) Preparation of compost
                v) Incineration
               vi) Sewage treatment

               Reasons for proper waste disposal

 Hazardous Chemicals down the drain can lead to pollution of ground water,
                       lakes, rivers, etc.
 Plants and animals will die if they are exposed to hazardous chemical waste.
 Serious health problems will occur in people if hazardous waste finds its way
                       into drinking water.

               Types of Garbage bin

Green bins are for biodegradable wastes like vegetables and fruit peels, spoilt food,
tea leaves, egg-shells, tissue paper, leaves, hair etc.

Blue bins are for recyclable wastes, old batteries, chocolate wrappers, polythene
               bags, etc.

Yellow bins are for toxic wastes, soiled bed sheets, animal carcasses and laboratory
               wastes.
