15.1 SOLAR SYSTEM AND THE ALMIGHTY SUN

Learning objective/Aim –The child will be able to know about the solar
               system and the almighty Sun.

 The Solar system consists of The Sun and everything that
                           moves around it.

 The Sun is in the centre of the solar system. It is known as the

                           head of the solar family.
 Solar system is always in motion. Eight known planets and
their moons, along with comets, asteroids, and other space

                           objects orbit the Sun.

                    The Sun

 The Sun is a massive ball of burning gas called a star.
 It looks big because it is closer to the earth compared to

                           other stars.
 It gives heat and light. In absence of the sun, the earth would

                           always be a dark place.
 The heat of the sun makes us sweat on a hot summer day.

The Sun warms the earth. It helps plants to grow, make food
                           and reproduce.

 Life is impossible on earth without the sun.
 We should not look directly at the Sun as its strong light

                           could damage our eyes.

Learning outcome-The childrenwill be able to describe the sun and

               solar system.
